Reading of the Wills

Many shows and movies (most recently for me Palm Royale and before that, The Gentlemen) showcase a scene where the family sits down with the decedent’s attorney, who reads the will out loud, usually in a beautiful wood paneled library. I have had a handful of families over the years who have asked me to do this at the death of their loved one, and I always remind them that if we all sit down together like this, it is not always a great use of their resources in terms of my billable hour, particularly if I need to travel to meet them. 

Instead, I recommend that whoever finds the will deposit it immediately with the Clerk of Court, whose job it is here in NC to safeguard the original on public record. The last-dated will that is in compliance with our state’s statutory requirements will be considered the one that dictates the inheritance of the decedent. So, think of me next time you see a will-reading and know that that is not the norm for most families!
